Name: Jan Van Maele

Affiliation:  KU Leuven


Jan Van Maele  teaches and researches communication at the Faculty of Engineering Technology, Campus Group T, at KU Leuven, Belgium. 

He holds a PhD in language assessment from the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium. His main interests are intercultural interaction, 

international education, and language assessment. He has collaborated in various international projects on these themes, including IEREST 

(intercultural learning in student mobility), ATIAH (internationalization-at-home), CEFcult (online assessment of language proficiency and 

intercultural competence), and a capacity building project of the Flemish Interuniversity Council with Universidad de Oriente in Cuba. In recent 

years he has been a visiting research scholar in China (Tsinghua), Japan (Tokyo University, Tokyo Institute of Technology) and the U.K. (Cardiff).

 Before he worked as a language teacher and teacher trainer in China and Belgium, and was adviser to the President of Group T Engineering 

College (Leuven) for strategy, internationalization and communication.


Name: Katrien Mertens

Affiliation:  KU Leuven


Katrien Mertens works at the International Office at UC Leuven-Limburg (UCLL), Belgium. She also teaches courses on Intercultural 

Communication,Personal Growth and Sustainable Development at the Postgraduate International Educating Class and the UNESCO  Teacher 

Training Programme (UCLL).She  has collaborated in various national and international projects on these themes, most recently ATIAH 

(internationalization-at-home) (KU Leuven). She is a strong advocate of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, of power skills

 such as empathy, vulnerability and gratitude and of methods like Appreciative Inquiry and Solution Focused Coaching. 


Name: Wim Van Petegem

Affiliation:  KU Leuven


Wim Van Petegem  holds an MSc degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ghent (Belgium), an MSc degree in Biomedical 

Engineering from the KU Leuven (Belgium) and a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from KU Leuven (1993). He worked at the University

 of Alberta, Edmonton (Canada), at the Open University of the Netherlands and at KH Leuven (Belgium). From 2001 till 2012 he was the 

head of the Media and Learning Center and later he became Director of the Teaching and Learning Department at KU Leuven (Belgium). 

Currently he is Professor at the Faculty of Engineering Technology at KU Leuven, and policy coordinator learning technologies. He is expert 

in multicampus and engineering education. He is teaching courses on media production and development of learning materials, and on 

professional and intercultural engineering skills. He is actively involved in different networks of universities (like SEFI, EDEN, and MEDEA).
